Set Point Theory and Fat Cell Theory Flashcards
Explain set point theory
is a theory that the body maintains its normal weight and body level with internal regulatory controls that dictate how much fat one has. Some individuals have a high setting meaning they tend to have a naturally higher weight as a set point.
Others have a low setting meaning they have a naturally lower body weight.
Explain fat cell theory
According to the fat cell theory when we finish growing we no longer produce more fat cells. When an adult gains weight they do not gain more fat cells the ones they already have simply grow larger. Adults who were leaner as children will have fewer fat cells to expand than those who were overfed during the crucial fat cell growth years.
