Set 5 Flashcards
What is mitosis?
nuclear division that results in 2 daughter cells that has the same number of chromosomes of the parent cell. ( clones)
what 4 stages that make up the cell cycle
G1
S (synthesis) phase
G2
M (mitosis) phase
what 3/4 stages in the cell cycle make up interphase
G1 ,S & G2
what is the point of the cell cycle
a repeating pattern of cell growth, mitosis and cell division
how long is the cell cycle ?
it is 24 hours
what happens in interphase G1 ?
cell are growing and producing products specific to their role in the body
why do some cells stay in G1? What is this stage called ?
cells may stay in G1 bc it does not divide and its called G0
what happens in interphase synthesis ?
chromosome duplications to produce sister chromotids that are joined at the centromere
what at interphase G2 ?
the cell is making protein for mitosis
what are the 4 phases of mitosis?
(PMAT)
Prophase
Metaphase
Anaphase
Telophase
what are the 5 steps in order of prophase ?
- chromosomes condense
- centrioles go to each pole of the cell
- microtubules extended from the centrioles
- nuclear membrane breaks down
- microtubules attach to the sister chromatids
what is a kinetochore ?
a protein structure located at the centromere
what is a centromere?
a region in the dna where microtubules attach
what is metaphase ?
where the sister chromatids align horizontally at the metaphase plate
what is anaphase ?
where the sister chromatids are separated and go to opposite poles
what is disjunction
sister chromatids separate and move to opposite poles
what are the 4 steps in order of telophase ?
1.nuclear membrane reforms
2. microtubules disappear
3. chromosomes uncoil
4. cytoplasm starts to divide
what is cytokinesis ?
division of the cytoplasm that splits the parent cell into two daughter cells
what is a telomere ?
the ends of each chromtids in a chromsoems there 4
