Session 8- COVID-19 Flashcards
What doe viruses consist of
Delivery system- protects it against degradation in the environment and contains structures used to bind to target cells
Payload- contains the genome and enzymes necsssary to initiate the first step in replication
Structure of Coronavirus
Spike glycoproteins
Membrane protein
Envelope glycoprotein
Nuclepcapsid protein
Lipid bilayer
Genetic material of corona virus
SsRNA-
Spike S glycoproteins required for entry into cells
Droplet transmission
Coughs and sneezes ca spread droplets of saliva and mucus
Airborne transmission
Tiny particles possible produced by talking are suspended in the air for longer and travel further
How does the virus enter cells
ACE2 a transmembrane protein which is widely expressed in lung heart kidney and GI tract which is a receptor for the virus
Entry then occurs via receptor-mediated endocytosis
Replication of coronavirus
+ SsRNA turns to -SsRNA via RNA-dependant RNA polymerase then back to + SsRNA
At the same time viral proteins are made which assembly into nucelocapsisds
Symptoms and complications of COVID-19
SOB Pneumonia Septic shock Renal failure Diarrhoea Myalgia Cough Hemoptysis Fever/ headache
Molecular COVID test
Obtain specimen
Extract RNA from specimen and convert to DNA
Amplify by PCR with SARS-Cov-2 specific primers
Interpret results
Salivadirect test for Covid
Obtain specimen
RNA-extraction free process. Convert RNA from specimen to DNA and amplify by PCR with SARS-Cov-2 primers
