Session 7- Infections of Surfaces Flashcards
what is a surface
interface between a solid and either a liquid or gas
what are some skin viruses
papilloma
herpes simplex
what are some gram positive skin bacteria
staph aureus
coagulase negative staphylococc
corynebacterium
what are some gram negative skin bacteria
enterobacteriacecae
what are some fungi found on skin
yeasts
dermatophytes
what are some skin parasites
mites
what flora are found in the nasopharynx
Neisseria meningitidis
streptococcus pneumonia
Haemophilus Influenzae
how do people get infections
when normally harmless of beneficial microorganisms transfer to other sites
invasion
migration
inoculation
haematogenous- bloodstream
microbiota
commensals
microorganisms carried on skin and mucosal surfaces
what oraganisms can cause prosthetic valve endocarditis
viridans streptococci enterococcus faecilis staph aureus candida staphylococci coagulase negative
what organisms can cause prosthetic joint infections
coagulase negative staphylococci
staphylococcus aureus
gram positive bacteria
what organisms cause cardiac pacing wire endocarditis
coagulase negative staphylococcus
staphylococcus aureus
pathogeneisis of infection at surfaces
adherence to host cells or prosthetic surface
biofilm formation
invasion and multiplication
Host response
- pyogenic (neutrophils- pus)
- granulomatous
how do microorganisms anchor to host cell membranes
pili or fimbriae
what are biofilms
biofilms comprise of microbial communities that are attached to surfaces and encased in an extracellular matrix of microbial origin
Biofilms protect the bacteria by preventing phagocytosis, antibodies and complememt recognition/ binding of receptors.
