Session 10- E Coli Flashcards
What is E. coli
Escherichia coli is a Gram-negative bacillus bacteria normal microbiata of large bowels
what does E. coli cause
Urinary tract infections
Intestinal infections
Sepsis
Neonatal meningitis
What does the MacConkey agar show and why
The E. coli will grow into pink/red colonies as E. coli is lactose fermenting so the lactose is broken down into lactic acid which is acidic
What antigens does E. coli have
O
H
F
K
What is ETEC
Enterotoxigenic E. coli- traveller’s diarhoea
Through the production of 2 toxins produces watery diarrhoea
What is EPEC
Enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC) - creates a translocation tube to access
and anchor into the enterocyte.
What is STEC
Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC)—also called Verocytotoxin-
producing E. coli (VTEC) or enterohaemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC). Shiga
toxin (A & B subunits) inhibits protein synthesis within the cell and this
causes cell death.
What E. coli are more common among young children
EPEC
EIEC
What do type 1 fimbrae do
Type 1 fimbriae which have adhesive tips that bind to the uroepitheliem mediating adhesion, invasion of uroepithelium and the formation of intracellular bacterial communities
What do alpha haemolysin do
Secreted, pore-forming toxin, cytotoxic towards epithelial cels in the urinary tract iron acquision
Adhesins of E COLI
Type 1 fimbrae
Toxins
Lipopolysaccharide
Alpha-haemolysin
Siderophores
How to prevent E. coli infection
Avoid foods and drink that could be contaminated with bacteria
Treatment of E. coli
Clear liquids in diarrrhoea to prevent dehydration and loss of electrolytes
Oral rehydration solutions
Avoid antibiotics- makes it worse
How to treat UTI-related E. coli infection
Antibiotics- trimethoprim or nitrofurantoin
