session 8 Flashcards
The Law of Specific Nerve Energies
any energy that is capable of activating neurons will be interpreted by the cortex that those neurons connect with
Retinex Theory
argues that color perception is a byproduct of comparing all of the colors available in a visual field
Color Constancy
means that, normally, we perceive objects as always being the same color, even if they might actually look very different at different times of day
rods
a majority of photoreceptors, they respond primarily to movement
cones
a minority of photoreceptors, they respond to color and detail
fovea
the midpoint of the retina, where most cones are concentrated, what we use when focusing our visual attention
Bipolar/Amacrine/Ganglion cells
cells in front of the retina where initial visual processing begins, pre-processing centers prior to reaching optic nerve
Midget Ganglion cells
a cell attached to a single cone in the fovea, 70% of our visual input is processed by these cells
Optic nerve
approximately 1 million axons that exit the eye carrying processed visual information to the thalamus
