Session 6 - Glands Flashcards
What is a gland?
An epithelial cell or collection of cells specialised for secretion.
What is an exocrine gland?
A gland which secretes molecules into a duct.
What is an endocrine gland?
A gland that secretes hormones directly into the blood
How are exocrine glands classified?
By their method of secretion, whether they are unicellular or multicellular and by whether they are acinar or tubular.
What is an acinar exocrine gland?
A cluster of cells in a ball shape with a duct.
How can you classify goblet cells?
Unicellular, tubular exocrine glands
What are the methods of secretion of exocrine glands? (3)
Merocrine, Apocrine and Holocrine secretion
What is Apocrine secretion?
Secreted droplets are covered by plasma lemme e.g. Fat droplets in breast milk.
What does merocrine secretion involve?
Exocytosis
What is holocrine secretion?
Where the whole cell breaks down e.g. Sebaceous glands of skin
What organ is an example of an exocrine and endocrine gland?
The pancreas
