What does the medical model entail?
- focuses on the physical condition
- pharmaceutical treatment preferred
not effective on its own as only deals with the what and not the why
What does the disease model entail?
- combines in patients with therapy and groups
- addiction is genetic and therefore predetermined
- abstinence/avoidance is the only viable treatment
What does the behavioural model entail?
- addiction does not exist
- excessive use/misuse is a result of social, economic and familial learned experiences
- alternative coping mechanisms can be taught and past experiences addressed
