Session 3- Gas Exchange; oxygen in the blood Flashcards
What does Dalton’s law state
In a mixture of gases eac h component gas exerts a partial pressure i proportion to its volume percentage in the mixture and the sum of the partial pressures of all the gases equals the total prsssur
What is partial pressure
Partial pressure is the force exerted by a gas. The sum of the partial pressures of all the gases in a mixture equals the total pressure (pressure expressed in mmHg in this example)
How do we calculate the partial pressure of a gas mixture
We multiply the percent of that gas times the total pressure
Where the atmospheric pressure is 88kpa we multiple the % of oxygen in the atmosphere - 20.9% changed to 0.29 times 88kpa which is 18.4kpa
What is Henry’s law
The amount of dissolved gas in a liquid is proportional to its partial pressure above the liquid and the to the gas’s solubility in that liquid
