Sensory Systems Flashcards
What are two examples of free nerve endings receptors?
Nociceptors and cold receptors
What are two examples of complex receptors?
Pacininan and Meissner’s Corpuscles
What are the different types of cutaneous receptor fibres
A-alpha
A-beta
A-delta
C
Describe the characteristics and stimuli detected by A-alpha fibres
Large myelinated (80-120m/s)
Proprioceptive
Describe the characteristics and stimuli detected by A-beta fibres
Moderate myelinated (30-70m/s)
Detects: touch, pressure and vibration
Describe the characteristics and stimuli detected by A-delta fibres
Small myelinated (5-30m/s)
Detects: Cold, “fast” localised pain, pressure
Describe the characteristics and stimuli detected by C fibres
Unmyelinated (0.5-2m/s)
Detects: warmth and “slow” diffuse pain
What is lateral inhibition?
Inhibition of lateral neurones enhances perception of stimulus (localisation)
What type of fibre do mechanoreceptors use?
A-alpha and A-beta
Where do mechanoreceptor first order fibres synapse?
In gracile and cuneate nuclei
What happens to second order mechanoreceptor fibres?
Dessucate in the brainstem and then project into the thalamus and cortex
What fibres transmit impulses from thermoreceptors and nociceptors?
A-delta and C
