Development of the Eye Flashcards
What tissues are included n the fibrous coat of the eye?
Cornea and sclera
What tissues are included n the vascular coat of the eye?
Ciliary body, iris, choroid
What tissues are included n the sensory coat of the eye?
Retina
What is the chorioid?
Produced vitreous humour
Why is the cornea described as an ‘immune privileged’ site?
Avascular - in transplantation, there is much less of a chance of host rejection
What is the function of Schlemm’s canal?
Serves as a drainage duct for aqueous humour
What is the lens of the eye made from?
Transparent, crystalline biconvex structure (can chain its shape)
What are the functions of the tear film?
- Keep cornea moist
- Washes away foreign bodies
- Antibodies and lysozyme kill microbes
- Smooths outer surface of cornea for refraction of light
What stain can be used on the corneal during examination?
Fluorescein
What is the composition of the tear film?
- Mucinous layer (30%)
- Aqueous layer (69%)
- Oily layer (<1%) (Most superficial)
What nerve is responsible for stimulation of tears?
CN VII
Outline the embryological development of the eye
Optic vesicles from out from the diencephalic part of the neural tube towards the ectoderm surface
Form the topic cup (Eye Socket) and lens vesicle (Eye)
