Sensory System Flashcards
What are the special senses?
Smell, taste, sight, hearing, equilibrium
Where are 70% of the sensory receptors?
The eyes
What are the accessory structures of the eye?
Eyelids, Eyelashes, Conjunctiva, Lacrimal Apparatus, Extrinsic Eye Muscles
Where do eyelids meet?
The medial and lateral commissure
What are the Eyelashes?
Tarsal glands produce an oily secretion that lubricates the eye
Where are Ciliary Glands located?
Between the eyelashes
What is the function of the Conjunctiva?
The membrane that lines the eyes
What does the Conjunctiva do?
Secretes mucus to lubricate the eye
What is the Lacrimal Apparatus?
Lacrimal glands and ducts
What is the function of the Lacrimal Gland?
Produces Lacrimal fluid
Where is the Lacrimal Gland located?
the lateral aspect of each eye
What is the function of the Lacrimal canaliculi?
Drain Lacrimal fluid from the eyes medially
What is the function of the Lacrimal sac?
Provides passage of Lacrimal fluid towards the nasal cavity
What is the function of the Nasolacrimal Duct?
Empties Lacrimal fluid into the nasal cavity
What do Lacrimal secretions (tears) contain?
Dilute salt solution, mucus, antibodies, lysozyme
What is the function of the lacrimal Apparatus?
Protects, moistens, lubricates, empties into the nasal cavity
What are the extrinsic eye muscles?
6 muscles that attach to the outer surface of the eye and produce movement
What movement does the lateral rectus produce?
Eye movement laterally
What movement does the medial rectus produce?
Eye movement medially
