Sensors 11 Flashcards
Definition of SIGINT
A generic term used to describe COMINT and ELINT
Definition of COMINT?
Intelligence derived from EM comms systems by other than intended recipients or users.
Ex.: Morse code, voice, fax, streaming video and data links
What is Interception of COMINT?
Ability of unauthorized users or enemy forces to detect a signal being transmitted.
What is Exploitation of COMINT?
Demodulation, capturing + using information without the knowledge of the originator + recipients.
Definition of ELINT?
intelligence derived from EM non-communications systems by other than intended recipients or users. Ex.: RADAR, nav aids, jamming transmissions.
Equipment to collect ELINT?
- Receiver/Antennas = land, sea, air, space; manual or computer controlled
- Pulse Analyzer = PW, PRI, scan type, scan rate
- Recorder = audio, video, computer disks; signal parameters; platform data
- Direction Finding equipment
What are the 2 categories of ELINT?
OPELINT (Operational ELINT)
TECHELINT (Technical ELINT)
Define OPELINT
Intelligence required for the planning and conduct of campaigns at the operational level.
Define TECHELINT
Intelligence concerning foreign technological developments, and the performance and operational capabilities of foreign material.
What is ESM?
ESM (Electronic Support Measures): Actions taken to search for, intercept and identify EM emissions and to locate their sources for the purpose of immediate threat recognition.
Relation ship between SIGINT and ESM
Control/Collection time/Analysis/Use
What kind of info can the ESM suite on the Aurora?
ELINT from surface vessel & threat detection and bearings
