vertigo (N/V)

feeling of being pulled to the ground

How do we test for Menderes disease?
A
Glycerol test: the high sugar content will pull the fluid from the semicircular canals and make hearing better.

During a Menderes disease attack what can we recommend for the pt?
A
Anticholinergics(Atropine) Antihistamines (Benadryl) Anti-emetics (compazine) Benzodiazepines (Ativan) Corticosteroids BEDREST (all the meds plus the attack can cause falls)

What is the management for Menderes between attacks?
A
diuretics
corticosteroids
low Na+ diet
stress reduction

Diet management for menieres disease?
A
- no sugary/salty foods, canned goods
- stay hydrated
- No caffeine (diuretic)
- eat fresh fruits/veggies
- no alcohol
- no MSG
- potassium if taking a loop diuretic (Thiazide diuretics are K+ sparing)
- avoid aspirin (may increase tinnitus/dizziness)
