Senses Part 1 Flashcards
somatic senses
touch, proprioception, temperature, nociceptors (pain, itch)
temp receptors
free nerve endings, cold receptors (body temp, about 45) pain receptors (activated above 45), 1mm receptive field
thermoreceptors
use cation channels called transient receptor potential channels
nociceptors
subjective perception, fast pain (sharp and localized by AD fibers), slow pain (fuller and more diffuse by C fibers), itch (histamine activates C fibers causing itch)
AB (beta) classes of somatosensory nerve fibers
large, myelinated, mechanical stimuli (30-70m/s)
Ad (delta) classes of somatosensory nerve fibers
small, myelinated; cold, fast pain, mechanical stimuli (12-30 m/s)
C (classes of somatosensory nerve fibers)
small, unmyelinated; slow pain, heat, cold, mechanical stimuli (.5-2 m/s)
nociceptors pathway
reflective protective response (integrated in spinal cord, withdrawal reflex); ascending pathway to cerebral cortex (becomes conscious sensation- pain or itch)
pain modulation
gate control theory (AB fibers synapse on inhibitory interneurons and increase inhibition)
integrated response from AB and C fibers decrease…
perception of pain
