Define Stimuli
Energy in the environment that influences a psychological activity or response
What are the sensory organs and what are they used for?
Sense organs that allow us to hear, see, smell, touch, taste and receive physical energy from the environment
Define Sensation
The process where sensory organs detect stimuli from the environment and transmit information to brain for processing
Define Perception
The mental process of organising information received by our sense organs into real life events
What is visual perception?
Process that allow us to organise and interpret visual information in reliable and meaningful way
What are the Gestalt Principles?
Figure ground, proximity, similarity, closure
Define visual illusion
A visual illusion is experienced when our perception of a stimulus is not the same as the reality of the object
What is the Müller Lyer Illusion?
This illusion consists of two lines of the same length with different typed ends, giving the effect on the viewer of one line being longer than the other.
Describe the Ames Room Illusion
This illusion consists of one person appearing taller than the other when 2 people are standing in a room as one is actually on a diagonal distance back but to the viewer this isn’t what they see.
Define transduction
- the process by which photoreceptors change light into signals which then travel along the optic nerve to the brain
Define transmission
- the process of sending electrical impulses along the optic nerve to the brain
Define interpretation
- the process or giving meaning to visual information so that we can understand what we’re looking at
- assigning meaning
Define organisation
- involves arranging the features of a visual image in a meaningful way
