Sensation And Perception Flashcards
What is sensation?
Physical stimulation of sense receptors by the environment, like light striking the retina
What is perception?
The organisation and interpretation of sensory information by the brain in order to understand the world around us
What is the difference between sensation and perception?
Sensation is our body’s way of detecting stimulus in the environment, perception is how our brain interprets these sensations
What is a binocular depth cue?
Depth cues that require both eyes
What is a monocular depth cue?
Perceptual depth cues that allow a person to judge depth and distance using just one eye
What is retinal disparity?
Each eye gets a slightly different view of the world, the closer the objects the bigger the difference of the two images
What is convergence?
When our eyes follow an object coming closer towards us our muscles around our eyes work harder
What is height in plane?
Objects that are higher up in the visual field appear further away
What is relative size?
When objects appear smaller in the visual field than known objects of a similar size
What is occlusion?
Objects that are behind or obscured by other objects are further away
What is linear perspective?
Lines that are parallel appear to get closer together and come to a point
