Perception Flashcards
What is the aim of Hudson’s study?
To see if people from different cultures perceive depth cues in a 2D image differently
What is the method of Hudson’s study?
He showed a 2D drawing to participants in South Africa - native black people (schooled and not schooled) and white people of European descent (schooled and not schooled). The participants has to say which animal the man was trying to spear
What were the results of Hudson’s study?
Both black and white schooled participants were more likely to to perceive depth than unschooled
What was the conclusion of Hudson’s study?
People from different cultural/educational backgrounds perceive depth differently
What is the aim of McGinnies study?
McGinnie wanted to see wether things that cause anxiety are less likely to be noticed than things that are emotionally neutral
What is the method of McGinnies study?
8 males and females were shown neutral and offensive words flashed on a screen, each participant had to say the word out loud
What is the results of McGinnies study?
Participants took longer to say offensive words like ‘bitch and ‘penis’ than neutral words like ‘apple and ‘dance’
What is the conclusion of McGinnies study?
This shows that emotion affects perceptual set
What is the aim of Gilchrist and Nesberg’s study?
To find out is food deprivation affects the perception of picture of food
What is the method of Gilchrist and Nesberg?
2 groups of students one group of students deprived of food for 20 hours and a control group (not hungry), the participants saw a slide of a meal for 15 seconds then they were shown the same slide but dimmer and they had to adjust it to look the same as before
What is the result of Gilchrist and Nesburgh study?
Participants perceived the food as brighter the longer they were deprived of food
What is the conclusion of Gilchrist and Nesburg’s study?
Being deprived of food increased perceptual set. This shows that hunger is a motivating factor that affects the way food-related pictures are perceived
