Experimentals Flashcards
What is a laboratory experiments?
Experiments that take place in a lab or confined space where the researcher is in control of the variables.
What is a field experiment?
An experiment that takes place in a natural setting but the researcher manipulates the IV.
What is a natural experiment?
An experiment which takes place in a natural place and the IV will happen naturally even if the researcher is not there.
What are the three types of experimental designs?
Matched pairs
Independent groups
Repeated measures
What is independent groups?
Having 2 groups of participants doing different conditions.
What is matched pairs?
Matching people with similar IQ and personality’s, one person does one condition and the other one do the other condition.
What is repeated measures?
The participants do both conditions.
What is a strength of independent groups?
The participants can’t guess the aims
What is a weakness of independent groups?
You need twice as many participants.
What is a strength of matched pairs?
Participants only take part in a single condition so order effect are less of a problem
What is a weakness of matched pairs?
You need twice as many participants.
What is a strength of repeated measures?
You don’t need to have as many participants.
What is a weakness of repeated measures?
Order effect is a problem because each participant has to do at least two tasks and the order of these tasks may be significant. Repeating two tasks may cause deterioration in the second task due to tiredness.
How can you counter order effect?
Counter-balancing - half of the participants do the conditions in one order and the other half do it in a different order.
