Semantic Development Flashcards
Whole object assumption
: when a child is confronted with a new word, they assume it represents the whole object !
Type assumption
the child assumes the word applies to all occurrences of that object, preventing semantic under-extension

Semantic errors
Categorical overextention, analogical, Mismatch statements: use of a seemingly random word in reference to something loosely related, e.g. duck to refer to a pond !
Basic-level assumption
stops a child over-extending too much, e.g. assumption that trousers refers to that which is worn on the legs, and not clothes in general !
However, the mutual exclusivity assumption can lead to under-extension - the idea that one object cannot ha
