french and indian war
(1754-1763) the english colonies vs french forces and their native allies (algonquin tribes), native colonies wanted the british out of their land, england won, colonists forced to play subservient roles to english officers
albany plan of union
(1754) influenced by the iroquois confederacy, proposed colonial union (join or die) and an assembly
treaty of paris

salutary neglect
english policy of letting the colonies do whatever they want as long as they were loyal to the king, stopped after the french and indian war bc england was in a ton of debt
pontiac’s rebellion
(1763) indigenous uprising against the british and their restricting of supplies (gunpowder, ammunition, etc.)
proclamation of 1763
sought to restrict the migration of colonists west past the appalachians, britain couldn’t keep spending money on rebellions, told colonies to stay put, colonists didn’t want to bc they had just fought for britain in the french and indian war and felt entitled to the westward land
stamp act
(1765) tax of paper goods, you have to buy a stamp for paper goods like books, newspaper, playing cards, etc., direct tax (citizens pay)
stamp act congress
(1765) representatives from nine colonies respond to british tax policies, said britain couldn’t tax americans without representation and that they were equal to all other british citizens
townshend acts
(1767) laws passed to raise revenue from taxes (duties) on imported british goods, were only paid for by merchants unlike stamp act, paid the salaries of british officials in the colonies
letters from a farmer in pennsylvania
(1767) by john dickinson, “parliament lacks the right to impose taxes on us”
sons and daughters of liberty
intimidated tax collectors (sons) and made their own goods as a protest (daughters), boycotted britsh goods due to parliament’s actions
boston massacre
(1770) produced the first instances of violence between troops and conflicts, crispus attucks first guy killed
coercive acts/intolerable acts
(1774) increased royal control closed boston’s port, mandated quartering, dissolved mass assembly
