Self-report design Flashcards
What are the three main designs used in questionnaires?
- Likert scales.
- Rating scales.
- Fixed choice option.
What is a likert scale?
A scale that indicates their agreement with a statement using a scale - typically 5 points - ranging from strongly agree to strongly disagree.
What is a rating scale?
A scale which has respondents identify a value that represents their strength of feeling about a particular topic.
What is a fixed choice option?
The participants are given a list of possible options and respondents are required to indicate those that apply to them.
Most interviews involve an interview schedule, what is meant by this?
The list of questions that the interviewer intends to cover.
Why should the interviewer schedule be standardised?
To reduce the contaminating effect of interviewer bias.
How many people are usually involved in an interview?
Two; an interviewer and a participant.
What is a group interview?
An interview where the interviewer interviews more than one participant.
What is meant by the term Jargon?
Jargon refers to technical terms that are only familiar to those within a specialised field or area.
How can rapport be established at the start of an interview?
By beginning with some neutral questions to make the participants feel relaxed and comfortable.
Is Jargon present in the following question:
Do you agree that maternal deprivation in infant-hood inevitably leads to affectionless psychopathy later in life?
This involves Jargon because only a psychology student would know the meaning of maternal deprivation and affectionless psychopathy.
Why are double-barrelled questions bad?
Because the participants may agree with one part of the question and disagree with the other part.
