Accuracy, Validity etc. Flashcards
What is meant by reliability?
If we repeat the experiment, will we find the same results (or similar)?
What is meant validity?
Are we measuring what we set out to measure?
What are the two main branches of validity?
- Internal validity,
- External validity.
What are the threats to the internal validity?
It could be threatened by extraneous variables, demand characteristics, researcher bias, social desirability bias and order effects (amongst others).
What are the different types of external validity?
- Ecological validity,
- Cultural validity,
- Population validity,
- Empirical validity.
What is meant by external validity?
Can we use the results to generate the real world?
What is meant by internal validity?
Are we measuring the effects of the IV on the DV?
What is meant by population validity?
Can the study sample be applied to the target population?
What is meant by mundane realism?
Are the findings applicable to real daily life?
What is meant by temporal validity?
Is it still relevant at the time?
What is meant by concurrent validity?
Do the findings fit with with established studies and measures.
What is meant by the term face validity?
Does the study appear to be testing the influence of the IV?
What is meant by ecological validity?
Are the conditions in the study the same as in real life?
What is meant by inter-rater reliability?
Used in interviewers when all the interviewers agree on the same findings.
What is meant by replication?
Repeating a study with a standardised procedure and achieving the same results.
