What is the psychosocial theory?
Patient responses to illness are influenced by the relationship among physical pathology, psychosocial health, and overall wellness.
What are some examples of psychosocial influences?
- coping mechanisms (crisis management, emotional well-being)
- support (family, friends, pets)
- socioeconomic status (education, career, social network)
- Environment (accommodations)
- Physical well-being (diet, goals)
How does a person with healthy self-concept see themselves?
The person would have a positive perception of his/her physical appearance, sexual performance, intellect, success, friendships, problem-solving abilities, and unique talents.
What factors affect self concept? And how?
Gender- women place high importance on appearance, men on individual success
Developmental Level- as we age it is more guided by self than by others opinions
Socioeconomic status- low status in this area correlates with depression
Family and Peers- gender, values, and place in family affect self concept
Locus of control- Internal- inner voice helps with accountability of choices and are usually more hardy. External- feel a lack of ability to change what happens to them (religion)
What are the four components of self-concept?
Body image- cognitive understanding and sensory input affect mental image of self
***Role Performance- actions a person takes in fulfilling a role
Personal Identity- learned through socialization, doesnt change very much, UNIQUE
Self-esteem- how well you like yourself. Difference between ideal self and actual
What should we include in a psychosocial assessment?
- biological, psychological, and social details
- functional abilities
- self-efficacy
- relationships
- interpersonal communication
- social resources/networks
- understanding current illness
- usual coping mechanisms
- health priorities
What is the nursing diagnosis of interrupted family processes used for?
change in family relationships or functioning
What is the nursing diagnosis of family coping used for?
usual support from a partner is compromised or disabled
What is the nursing diagnosis of parental role conflict used for?
the parent shows role confusion and or conflict in response to crisis
What is the nursing diagnosis of ineffective individual coping used for?
the patient fails to comprehend stressors when they perceive incorrect or dangerous life choices as normal
What is the nursing diagnosis of post-trauma syndrome used for?
maladaptive learned response to a traumatic event
What is the nursing diagnosis of risk for loneliness used for?
patient is separated from people, culture, home, and other attachments
What is the nursing diagnosis of social isolation used for?
patient experiences significant aloneness that is a threat to health
What is the nursing diagnosis of risk for violence (directed at others) used for?
a patient threatens or uses aggression or violence to harm others

experiencing ongoing negative self-appraisal
