2
Q
Why does elective breeding work?
A
Some defined characteristics are inherited due to genes being passed on
3
Q
What do we use selective breeding for?
A
Food, medicine, research (e.g. spare parts or testing drugs) or aesthetics (e.g. flowers and dogs)
4
Q
How does selective breeding work?
A
- Select two wheat plants with a high yield
- Breed them together by using a brush to remove pollen from the anther of one plant and place it on the stigma of the other
- From the offspring produced select the two with the highest yield
- Breed the offspring
- Repeat this over several generations until all the offspring produced give a high yield
