Feeding Relationships Flashcards
Producer
An organism that makes its own food e.g. green plants
Primary consumer
An organism that eats producers
Secondary consumer
An organism that eats primary consumers
Tertiary consumer
An organism that eats secondary consumers
Decomposer
An organism that feeds by breaking down dead remain of other organisms e.g. some fungi and bacteria
Food chain
A flow diagram showing feeding relationships in an ecosystem
Food web
A diagram showing the way in which several food chains are linked together in an ecosystem
Pyramid of numbers
A diagram in which blocks making up a pyramid represent the total number of organisms at each trophic level
Pyramid of mass
A diagram in which blocks making up a pyramid represent the total mass of organisms at each trophic level
Pyramid of energy transfer
A diagram in which blocks making up a pyramid represent the total energy stored in organisms at each trophic level
Why does only about 10% of energy transfer from one trophic level to the next?
Because energy is lost as heat from metabolic/life processes or sunlight entering the system is reflected or not all material is consumed/digested
