Sedative-Hypnotic Drugs
Drugs that depress central nervous system (CNS) function
Primarily used to treat anxiety and insomnia
pharmacologic effects of benzos
CNS: reduce anxiety & promote sleep
Cardio: oral (no effects) IV (hypotension & cardiac arrest)
Respiratory: weak resp. depressant
therapeutic use of benzos
anxiety, insomnia, seizure disorders, muscle spasms
adverse effects
CNS depression, temp memory impairment, res. depression
black box warning for benzos
using with opioids may result in profound sedation = death
3 main drugs
diazepam
lorazepam
alprazolam
toxicity treatment for benzos
flumazenil = will reverse the sedative effects
barbiturates
Cause tolerance and dependence
High abuse potential
Used less often than in the past b/c they have been replaced by safer drugs
