Q

How does this refer contextually?

A

links to the hippy culture of the 60s (which acted as a distinct resistance to the slick trendy one represented by the men at the end) and drug culture e.g. LSD - people who were questioning the system needed to find a new light to look upon things, their solution was to explore psychedelics. Psychedelic trance allowed them to look at things with a different angle.

Q

What happens on the final ‘Goodbye Ruby Tuesday’ lyric?

A

She looks to the audience twirls her hair in her right hand, smiles and on the lyrics she runs towards the men at the back and launches herself into their arms and they throw her into the air and she does a full 360 pirouette horizontally - shows her unchangeable, careless nature. Also shows ideas of her being mischievous and bold as she is essentially using the men. Can link to her innocently twirling her hair on ‘darkest night’

Q

What pathways are used in this section and what do they show?

A

Her pathways often trace circles with the recurring use of USL-DSR diagonal for large travel spaces - large use of space links to her freedom - liberation of women with the pill

Q

How is the changing gender roles shown in this section?

A

When 4 men enter they seem intrigued and attempt to encircle and manipulate her which they fail to do so. Could link to the contraceptive pill and how women couldn’t open back accounts without husbands co-signing to them. Law meant that women had no right to husband’s earnings or property. And how men were used to this power over women which Ruby is subverting (hence the single spotlight focused/ follows her). Also hippy culture of the 60s (which acted as a distinct resistance to the slick trendy one represented by the men at the end).

Q

What do the male dancers do once they’ve entered on stage?

A

The four male dancers transfer weight, clicking their hands, reminiscent of a boy band or top of the pops. They exist purely as her backing dancers, the focus is on her. The little red rooster man does the rooster walk - no progression from him. The other men do more balletic movement, he does social dance - he has to lead.

Q

What is the costume like in this section?

A

long sleeve, full length a line dress and bare feet - her changeability, hippy culture and freedom. Men wear very dark purple velvet blazers and ties. Dark colour - they fade into the background, focus is on her and her red dress. Costume also shows a contrast between hippy culture and slick, trendy culture. No shoes.
