What happens on the lyric ‘I see a red door and want it painted black’?
On ‘painted’ he brings his arm over the top whilst doing a full plie to the floor and switches his arm across his heart to the other diagonal as if to paint his heart black.
- potential link to mental health, loss of love.
What happens on the lyric ‘I see the girls walk by’?
- the girls confidently strut to stage left in a line as they regain power
- shows female empowerment. Also a link to Pan’s people (historical, cultural pop scene).
What happens on the lyric ‘I look inside myself and see my heart is black’?
On the floor he swipes his left arm across the floor then his right arm and brings his arms together and then unfolds them to the floor as if he’s looking at his reflection
- regaining of his masculinity as his painting his heart black and is isolating his emotions/feelings of loss.
How does the male and female movement dynamics contrast?
The movement of the women’s trio is very lethargic when in unison which contrast the man’s hectic/ aggressive quality.
How does the costume change for the female dancers?
Costume is the same but also with a red neck scarf - shift to the 60s. Red represents promiscuity perhaps about sexual liberation of women with the pill.
What does the man wear in this section?

How is the change in gender roles shown in this section?
Trio is at the back and man’s solo is at the front until the women come forward and encircle him - shows how men are in the foreground of society and the change in which women are getting more empowered and agency.
