MMF / Core Size
Multi-Mode Fiber / 62.5 microns
▪ Shorter distances than single-mode fiber
▪ Larger core size allows for multiple modes of travel for the light signal
▪ Common uses:
- Routers to switches
- Switches to switches
- Servers to switches
SMF / Core Size
Single-Mode Fiber / 10 microns
▪ Longer distances than multimode fiber
▪ Smaller core size allows for only a single mode of travel for the light signal
▪ Common uses:
- Routers to switches
- Switches to switches
SC Fiber Terminator
Subscriber Connector - A standard-duplex fiber-optic connector with a square molded plastic body and push-pull locking features. (Can be used with single-mode or multimode fiber)
ST Fiber Terminator
Straight Tip Connector - A high-performance fiber-optic connector with round ceramic ferrules and bayonet locking features. (Can be used with single-mode or multimode fiber)
LC Fiber Terminator
Lucent Connector - a plastic housing with push-pull design that utilizes a latch instead of a locking tab to secure it in place. Two cables can be mated together.
Comes in three different colors: beige (multimode), blue (single-mode), and green (angle polish).
MTRJ Fiber Terminator
Mechanical Transfer Registered Jack Connector - A Fiber optic Cable Connector popular with small form factor devices due to its small size; the connector houses two fibers and mates with locating pins on the plug. (Connect Fiber switches to Fiber distribution panel then to another connector type to connect
GBIC Transceiver
▪ Standard, hot-pluggable gigabit Ethernet
transceiver (copper or fiber)
SFP Transceiver
Small Form-factor Pluggable (SFP)
▪ Compact, hot-pluggable optical module transceiver
▪ Support up to 4.25 Gbps
▪ aka Mini-GBIC
SFP+ Transceiver
Small Form-factor Pluggable Enhanced (SFP+)
▪ Support up to 16 Gbps
QSFP Transceiver (QSFP+; QSFP28; QSFP56)
Quad Small Form-factor Pluggable (QSFP)
▪ Compact, hot-pluggable optical module transceiver
▪ Supports up to 100 Gbps
WDM
Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) (Typically Single Mode Fiber)
▪ Combines multiple signals into one signal and sends over a single fiber optic strand using different wavelengths of the laser light source
