Section 3 - DNA and protein synthesis Flashcards
In DNA, what are the bases attached to eachother by?
Hydrogen bonds
What shape is DNA
Double helix
What are each of the two DNA strands made up of?
Lots of small molecules called nucleotides
How many different bases does DNA have?
4
What are the four different bases found in DNA?
Adenine (A), Cytosine (C), Guanine (G), Thymine (T)
What keeps the two DNA strands tightly wound together?
Each base forming hydrogen bonds to the base on the other strand
Which bases join up together?
Ademine (A) and Thymine (T), Cytosine (C) and Guanine (G)
What is another term for pairs of bases?
Complementary bases
Why do complementary bases join together?
They complement eachother in shape - this is called complementary base pairing
Which subcellular structure controls the production of proteins in a cell?
DNA
What is the definition of a gene?
A section of DNA that codes for a particular protein
What decides the order of amino acids in a protein?
The order of the bases in a gene
