Section 1 - Lipids Flashcards
What are lipids?
Oils and fats
What group of lipids are plant oils and animal fats mostly made up of?
Triglycerides
What does a triglyceride consist of?
A molecule of glycerol with three fatty acids attached to it
What is a fatty acid molecule?
A long chain of carbon atoms with an acid group (-COOH) at one end. Hydrogen atoms are attached to the carbon atoms.
If every carbon atom in the chain is joined by a single bond, we say that the fatty acid is ___________.
saturated
If one or more of the carbon bonds in the chain is a double bond, we say that the fatty acid is ____________.
unsaturated
If many carbon atoms in the chain are joined by double bonds, we say that the fatty acid is _____________.
polyunsaturated
What are phospholipids?
Phospholipids are like triglycerides, but instead of having three fatty acid chains, they have two fatty acid chains and a phosphate group.
What are cell membranes made from?
A double layer of phospholipids
