Section 3 Chapter 1: Transposition, Ranges, And Characteristics Flashcards
What is transposition?
Transposition is the practice of moving a note or a group of notes higher or lower in pitch while maintaining their relative harmonic relationship and rhythmic notation.
How do you transpose by scale degrees?
label each note with the scale degree of its original key and then to perform or to write the same pattern in a different key.
What method can increase accuracy when a composition has several chromatic alterations, complex scale degrees, or complicated key relationships?
Transposition by interval.
What are the two ways you can approach transposition by interval?
- Identify the interval difference between the original and new key. Then, transpose each note based on the interval difference of the original and new key. 2.Identify the interval difference between the original and new key and establish the first transposed note. Then, transpose the remaining notes based on the melodic intervals of the original key.
What is transposition by key signature?
This method of transposition is used when the key signature needs to change, but the notes on the staff do not. As with all transposition methods, rhythmic and melodic interval relationships need to remain consistent.
