Section 3 Flashcards
What is growth?
an increase in size of a microbial population (reproduction)
What is the first step of binary fission?
the parent cell replicates DNA
What is the second step of binary fission?
the cell elongates and separates replicated DNA molecules
What is the third step of binary fission?
the cross wall grows inward
What is the forth step of binary fission?
the cross wall forms completely around separated DNA
What is the fifth step of binary fission?
the daughter cells separate
What is binary fission?
when the plasma membrane and cell wall start forming an equatorial septum that splits the cell in 2 daughter cells
What is budding?
when the daughter cell buds off a larger mother cell
What is doubling/generation time?
the time it takes for a population of bacteria to double in size
What does culturing/cultivating do?
it promotes the growth of bacteria in the lab
What is a media?
bacteriological foods/mixtures of nutrients contained in liquid or solid form
What are cultures?
when microorganisms enter a liquid medium or a surface of a solid medium and reproduce
What is a liquid media?
a broth
What is a solid media?
agar plates
What is culturable bacteria?
bacteria that can be cultured in a lab
