section 2: structures and functions in living organisms a & b Flashcards
the levels of organisation within organisms:
organelles, cells, tissues, organs and systems
organelles
highly organised structure of molecules. Are within cells and have a special function
cells
basis of living things, made up of organelles. functional unit.
tissues
a collection of similar cells all serving a common function
organs
made up of several kinds of tissues together forming a functioning unit.
system
A group of two or more organs. example: the cardivascular system, made up of heart, blood and blood vessels
animal cell
contains a nucleus in the centre, surrounded by a cytoplasm, around the outside is the cell membrane
plant cell
a vacuole in the centre surrounded by the cytoplasm; within this is the nucleus and chloroplasts. Surrounding this is the cell membrane and around that is the cell wall.
compare the structures of plant and animal cells
Differences
Plant cells have a vacuole
Plant cells have chloroplasts
Plant cells have a cell wall
Similarities
They have a nucleus
They have cytoplasm
They have a cell membrane
nucleus
contains all the genetic info in the cell, thought of as the centre. controls the cells activities.
cytoplasm
surrounds the nucleus within the cell wall. where the reactions take place in the cell
cell membrane
controls the movement of chemiclas in and out of the cel
cell wall
made of celullose, strengthens the cell wall
chloroplasts
contain chlorophyll, used in photosynthesis
vacuole
keeps the cell turgid (keeping it filed with water)
