Define the term HAZMAT.

A

A material that has one of the following characteristics: 1. Flashpoint below 200F or is subject to spontaneous heating when not properly handled 2.Threshold limit value below 1000 ppm for gases and vapors, below 500 mg/m3 for fumes and below 30 mppcf for dusts 3. single oral dose will cause 50% fatalities to test animals in doses of 500 mg per kg or less 4. causes first degree burns 5. produces sensitizing or irritating effect 6. is radioactive.

Q

Define the term AUL/SHML.

A

Commands are asked to develop, implement, and revise as necessary a facility level Hazardous Material (HM) Authorized Use List (AUL). For every HM - AUL must have stock num and item name. AUL must identify process for which HM is allowed to be used

Q

Explain the general procedures to be followed when a HAZMAT spill is discovered

A

Because of the extremely hazardous nature of many materials, only trained personnel shall respond to a hazardous material (HM) spill.

Personnel shall be trained by division officers or supervisory personnel to clean up small spills of HM.

Appropriate Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDSs) shall be used to conduct training.

Response procedures for many specific situations are provided in other documents
