Section 10: Megakaryocytopoiesis PLT Series Flashcards
Define -petechia
Pin head sized sites of bleeding under the skin due to a decreased/low PLT count
Define -thrombocytopenia
Due to decreased production or increased consumption (PLT destruction)
Define -purpura in regards to platelet numbers
references a decrease number of PLTs caused by a blood disorder, looks similar to petechia but is slightly larger under the skin
Define -thrombocytosis
Primary and Secondary
Primary - due to malignant proliferation
Secondary due to reactive response - trauma, blood loss, tiss damage, inflammation and exercise
Define -endomitosis
during proliferation, the promegakaryoblast undergoes endomitosis which results in the giant cell, the megakaryocyte
State the function of platelets
primary function of platelets is to prevent and stop bleeding with the use of fibrinogen
list the stages of megakaryocytopoiesis in order of maturation.
Megakaryoblast
Promegakaryocyte
Megakaryocyte
Thrombocyte
list the causes of thrombocytosis and thrombocytopenia
Thrombocytosis- two causes (Primary and Secondary)
Thrombocytopenia - BM disorders, leukemias, bone marrow infection …etc
Be able to differentiate the following cells on a wright stained smear: Megakaryoblast, promegakaryocyte, megakaryocyte thrombocyte
Images later :)
Discuss how clumped platelets should be handled when found on an automated CBC report and / or peripheral blood smear
Identify the following Cell:
Megakaryoblast
Identify the Following Cell:
Promegakaryocyte
Identify the Following Cell:
Megakaryocyte
Identify the Following Cell:
Megakaryocyte without PLTS
