section 1; cells Flashcards
Cell
the smallest unit that can perform all life processes; cells are covered by a membrane and have DNA and cytoplasm
Nucleus
a membrane-bound organelle that contains the cell’s DNA and that has a role in processes such as growth, metabolism and reproduction
cytoplasm
the fluid inside of a cell
Cell membrane
a phosphilipid layer that covers a cell’s surface; acts as a barrier between the inside of a cell and the cell’s environment
cell wall
a ridged structure that surrounds the cell membrane and provides to the cell
Mitochondria / Mitochondrion
the cell organelle that is surround by two membranes and that is the sit of cellular respiration
chloroplast
a green pigment that captures light energy for photosynthesis
Golgi complex
a cell organelle that helps make a package materials to be transported out of the cell
endoplasmatic reticulum
a system of membrane that is found in a cell cytoplasm and that assist in the reproduction processing and transport of proteins and in the production of liquids
ribosome
a cell organelle composed of RNA and protein the site of protein synthesis
lysosome
a cell organelle that contains digestive enzymes
vacuole
stored water in a cell
prokaryote
an organism that consists of a single cell that deos not have a nucleus
eukaryote
an organism made up of cells that has a nucleus enclosed by a membrane
tissue
a group of similar cells that perform a common function
