Seborrhoeic Eczema Flashcards
What is it
common dermatitis affecting areas of skin rich in sebaceous glands. It can be chronic or relapsing and is most common in young adults and the elderly.
What they look like
ill-defined, greasy, flaky scales on an erythematous background. It affects sebum-rich areas in particular the nasolabial folds, posterior auricular skin and scalp.
What is the cause
inflammatory reaction to the proliferation of Malassezia furfur, a yeast normally found on the skin.
What are the risk factors
Family history
Oily skin
Immunosuppression (such as HIV)
Neurological and psychiatric diseases (such as Parkinson’s Disease or Depression)
Stress
What is the management in adults
Zinc Pyrithione shampoo (this can be purchased over the counter)
Ketoconazole shampoo or cream
Short course of topical corticosteroid
What is infantile seborrhoeic eczema
Cradle cap - common skin condition in 3< month kids
What are the symptoms
No pain or discomfort
How does it present
Infantile Seborrhoeic Dermatitis appears as diffuse, yellow, greasy scales, classically with no underlying erythema. It is most commonly seen on the scalp, but can also affect the armpit or groin.
