What is erythema nodosum
Erythema nodosum is a form of panniculitis (inflammation of the fat under the skin) resulting in tender, raised, red nodules that usually affect the shin.
What are the causes of Erythema NODOSUM
NO cause (idiopathic in 50%)
Drugs: sulfonamides, dapsone
OCP
Sarcoidosis
Ulcerative colitis/Crohn’s
Micro: Tuberculosis, Streptococcus, Toxoplasmosis
What is inflamed in erythema nodosum
inflammation of subcutaneous fat
typically causes tender, erythematous, nodular lesions
What is the management
usually resolves within 6 weeks
lesions heal without scarring
What are the infective causes
streptococci
tuberculosis
brucellosis
