Seborrhoeic dermatitis
Inflammatory skin condition that affects the sebaceous glands
Which areas does seborrhoeic dermatitis affect?
Scalp
Nasolabial folds
Eyebrows
Presentation of seborrhoeic dermatitis
Erythema, dermatitis and crusted dry skin
Seborrhoeic dermatitis in infants
Cradle cap - crusted dry flaky scalp
What is the causative organism for seborrhoeic dermatitis
Malassezia yeast
Management of cradle cap
Self limiting - reassurance
Advice:
1st - baby oil
2nd - white petroleum jelly overnight
3rd - anti-fungal cream such as clotrimazole or miconazole, for up to 4 weeks
Severe or unresponsive:
- referral to dermatologist
When does cradle cap resolve
By 4 months of age but can last until 12 months
Management of seborrhoeic dermatitis of the scalp
Ketoconazole shampoo
2nd line - topical steroids for severe itching
How to use ketoconazole shampoo
Left on for 5 mins before washing off
Management of seborrhoeic dermatitis of the face and body
1st line - anti-fungal cream such as clotrimazole or miconazole, for up to 4 weeks
2nd line - topical steroids
If severe or unresponsive, refer to dermatology
