Erythema Multiforme
Erythematous rash caused by a hypersensitivity reaction
Causes of erythema multiforme
Viral infections - herpes simplex virus
Medications
Mycoplasma pneumonia
Presentation of erythema multiforme
Widespread, itchy, erythematous rash.
Characteristic “target lesions”
Symptoms come on abruptly over a few days.
May be associated with mild fever, stomatitis, muscle and joint aches, headaches and general flu-like symptoms
Target lesions
Red rings within larger red rings, with the darkest red at the centre, similar to a bulls-eye target
Complication for erythema multiforme
Can cause a sore mouth (stomatitis).
Management of erythema multiforme
Supportive management
How is a diagnosis of erythema multiforme made
Clinically
If no clear underlying cause:
- CXR - mycoplasma pneumonia
How long does erythema multiforme take to resolve
1 - 4 weeks
Treatment for severe erythema multiforme
Admission to hospital
IV fluids, analgesia and steroids (systemic or topical).
Antibiotics or antivirals if infection is present
