Eczema herpeticum
Viral skin infection caused by the herpes simplex virus or varicella zoster virus
Herpes simplex 1 virus
Associated with a coldsore in the patient or a close contact
Risk factors for eczema herpeticum
Skin conditions such as atopic dermatitis
Presentation of eczema herpeticum
Widespread, erythematous painful, vesicular rash
Can have pustules
After vesicles burst they leave a small punched out ulcer with a red base
Systemic symptoms:
- fever
- lethargy
- irritability
- reduced oral intake.
- lymphadenopathy
Investigations for eczema herpeticum
Normally clinical diagnosis but can do skin swab - viral PCR
Management of eczema herpeticum
Mild - moderate - oral aciclovir
Severe - IV aciclovir
Complications f eczema herpeticum
Life threatening -immunocompromised patients
Bacterial superinfection
