What is the causative organism for hand, foot and mouth disease
Coxsackie A virus
Presentation of hand, foot and mouth disease
Starts with a viral URTI - coryzal symptoms
After 1 – 2 days small mouth ulcers appear
Followed by blistering red spots across the body
Painful mouth ulcers on tongue
Rash may be itchy

Clinical diagnosis
Can do skin swab - PCR

Supportive treatment
How long does the rash last for
A week to 10 days

Highly contagious - avoid sharing towels and bedding, washing hands and careful handling of dirty nappies.
Complications of hand, foot and mouth disease
Dehydration
Bacterial superinfection
Encephalitis
