Search And Rescue Flashcards
(Glossary)
Search and Rescue:
A service that seeks missing aircraft and assists those found ot be in need of assistance.
(2-1-4)
What order is operational priority?
>emergencies >medevacs >search and rescue >presidential >flight check
10-1-(3-4)
What kind of assistance do aircraft in distress get?
Maximum assistance
(10-3-(2&6)
What information do you forward to the ARTCC for emergencies or overdue aircraft?
> flight plan (including color of aircraft if known)
time of last transmission received, by whom, and frequency used
last position report and how determined
aircraft beacon code
# of persons on board
fuel status
facility working aircraft and frequency
last known position, how determined, time, estimated present position, and max range of flight of the aircraft based on remaining fuel and airspeed
Pos of other aircraft near aircraft’s route of flight, when requested
whether or not an ELT signal has been heard or reported in the vicinity of the last known position.
other pertinent info
(10-6-5)
What separation do you give between SAR and the aircraft in distress?
Standard IFR separation
10-1-(3-4)
What do you do if you are in direct communication with an aircraft in distress?
Handle the emergency, coordinate and direct the activities of assisting facilities.
10-1-(3-4)
When do you transfer communication of an aircraft in distress?
When you feel better handling of the emergency will result.
10-1-(3-4)
Who do you notify if the aircraft in distress is operated by a foreign air carrier?
Notify the center serving the departure or destination point.
10-1-(3-4)
Who is responsible for receiving and relaying all pertinent ELT signal information to the appropriate authorities?
The ARTCC
10-1-(3-4)
If an aircraft in distress has to be escorted, what do you have to consider?
The close formation required by both aircraft and whether they’ll have to maneuver through the clouds.
10-1-(3-4)
What do you have to ask the aircraft in distress before deciding whether or not to have them escorted?
Whether they are familiar with and capable of formation flight
10-1-(3-4)
Do not allow aircraft to join up in formation during emergency conditions unless:
> they are familiar with/capable of formation flight
> they can communicate with one another, and have visual contact with each other
10-1-(3-4)
If there is a need for aircraft that are not designated as search and rescue aircraft to get closer to one another than radar separation standards allow, how must the maneuver be accomplished?
Visually, by the aircraft involved.
(10-3-(2&6)
To assist the RCC and SAR teams in the conduct of the SAR missions, provide the most accurate
Latitude and longitude available to the FAA using en route and terminal radar sensor data near the aircraft’s last known position
(10-3-(2&6)
Utilize any available method to determine the initial altitude and longitude to:
Prevent an undue delay
