What is the FAF?

A

> the fix where the final approach is executed
identifies the beginning of the final approach
has the Maltese cross on FLIPs for nonprecision
has the lightning bolt symbol on FLIPs for precision approaches

What is a missed approach?

A

> a maneuver when an instrument approach cannot be completed
a pilot executing a missed approach prior to the Missed Approach Point (MAP), must continue along the final approach to the MAP

What is a missed approach point?

A

> the point in which a missed approach procedure will be executed if the required visual reference does not exist
MAPs are usually the beginning of the runway??

Q

(.65 2-7-2)

To arriving aircraft on initial contact or asap, when can tower omit the altimeter setting to aircraft?

A

When the aircraft is sequenced or vectored to the airport by the approach control having jurisdiction of that facility.

When the weather report remarks “pressure falling rapidly” who do you give the altimeter setting to as frequently as possible?

A

Aircraft executing non-precision instrument approaches.

Except for visual approaches, do not clear an aircraft direct to:

Q

Include the weather report when it is ________________, when an approach clearance is relayed through a communication station other than an air carrier company radio.

You can do this by telling the station to:

A

> required and available

> issue current weather

Q

(4-8-6)

16
Q

(4-8-6)

What do you include in the circling approach clearance if landing will be made on a runway other than that aligned with the direction of instrument approach?

A

Instructions to circle to the runway in use.

17
Q

(4-8-6)

What is the circling approach phraseology?

A

CIRCLE TO RUNWAY (#)

Or

CIRCLE (direction using compass points) OF THE AIRPORT/RWY FOR A LEFT/RIGHT BASE/DOWNWIND TO RWY (#)

18
Q

(4-8-6)

Why don’t you use clearances like “extend downwind leg” for circling approach?

A

Might cause an aircraft to exceed the circling approach area distance

19
Q

(4-8-7)

What is a side-step maneuver?

A

When ATC clears an aircraft to one RWY and informs the aircraft that landing will be made on a parallel RWY

20
Q

(4-8-8)

When you don’t need direct comm with an aircraft doing an approach into an uncontrolled airport, what phraseology do you use?

A

CHANGE TO ADVISORY FREQUENCY APPROVED

21
Q

(4-8-9)

An approach clearance automatically approves an aircraft to execute:

A

The missed approach

22
Q

(4-8-10)

What information do you give an aircraft that is unfamiliar with approach procedure?

A

> initial approach altitude
direction and distance from the holding fix within which procedure turns is to be completed
altitude at which the procedure turn is to be made
final approach course and altitude.
missed approach procedures if considered necessaryL,/

23
Q

(4-8-10)

Give an example of how you would give procedure details for an aircraft unfamiliar with the approach:

A

INITAL APPROACH AT (altitude), PROCEDURE TURN AT (alt), (#) MINUTES/MILES (direction), FINAL APPROACH ON (name of NAVAID) (specified) COURSE/RADIAL/AZIMUTH AT (altitude)

24
Q

(4-8-11)

IFR aircraft practicing instrument approaches must be afforded approved separation until:

A

> the aircraft lands and the flight is terminated, or

>the pilot cancels the flight plan

25
Q

(4-9-11)

Where separation services are not provided to VFR aircraft practicing instrument approaches, ATC must

A

> instruct the pilot to maintain VFR
advise the pilot that separation services are not provided
provide traffic info or advise the pilot to contact the appropriate facility

(ACID), MAINTAIN VFR, PRACTICE APPROACH APPROVED, NO SEPARATION SERVICES PROVIDED
