Describe thought insertions
People believe their thoughts have been put there by someone else. This makes speech hard to follow, can cause loss of concentration and muddled thinking.
They may also have thought broadcasting which is thinking others can hear their thoughts
Describe disordered thinking
People find it hard to put their thoughts into logical sense. They may make up words (neologisms)
Describe hallucinations
Hearing/seeing things that aren’t there. Feeling like they’re being touched by someone/something. They may hear critical voices that are harsh and tell them what to do
What are 3 types of delusions?
Paranoid delusions
Delusions of grandeur
Delusions of persecution
What are paranoid delusions?
People believe someone is against them/ trying to harm them
What are delusions of grandeur?
People believe they are in a position of power or have special powers
What are delusions of prosecution
Believe people are plotting against them, spying on them or trying to harm them. They may believe unrelated things are secret messages for them
What are some negative symptoms?
Lack of energy and apathy Social withdrawal Flatness of emotions Not looking after self and appearance Lack of pleasure in daily life
What is the problem with culture?
Schizophrenia exists world wide but symptoms vary from culture to culture
Some places like Ghana believe hearing voices is a spiritual experience
Japan are reluctant to diagnose
