What are the four D’s?
A
Deviance (from stats or social norms)
Dysfunction
Distress
Danger

What are the two diagnostic manuals?
A
The ICD and DSM

What is deviance?
A
Clinicians look at the extent to which the behaviour is ‘rare’ within society or statistical norms

What is dysfunction?
A
If the behaviour is significantly interfering with the persons life then a mental illness may be present.

What is distress?
A
Is the behaviour causing upset to the individual? This is separate to the other D’s as someone may be extremely distressed but may be able to function normally.

What is danger?
A
The patients behaviour has to be assessed under two key elements of danger: danger to themselves or danger to others.
