Burger Flashcards
What was the aim
To investigate if people would still obey today and how this would be effected by social norms
What was the screening process?
Screened out those people who may be familiar with Milgrams study, went through a series of tests and interviews with a clinical psychologist, of 123 ppts 47 were excluded.
What was the final sample
29 men, 41 women ages 20 to 81 years old
What was the method?
Participants were randomly assigned to either a base or modelled condition
What was the base condition?
Ppts went through the same procedure as milgram’s original study but it stopped at 150v.
After ppts pressed 75v they heard a small grunt, at 150v they heard the learner complain about their heart
What was the modelled refusal condition?
2 confederates were used, 1 of them started the shocks and refused to continue at 90v so the real ppt was asked to continue the experiment
What did Burger conclude?
The same situations factors that affected obedience in milgrams study still apply today
Seeing another person refuse has no real effect on obedience
What were some ethical improvements?
Ppts were told at least three times they could withdraw and still get their money
Sample shock was only 15v
Instant debrief
Experimenter was also a clinical psychologist told to end the study if there were signs of excessive stress
