To conduct a lab experiment to study how a title prompt will affect people’s recall using their schemes of ‘doing laundry’
What was the sample?
Opportunity sample gathering 27 people aged 16-20 from college
What method was used?
Independent measures, half the group had a title ‘doing laundry’ and the other half had no title. They had 5 minutes to recall it on a piece of paper and it was marked using a standardised procedure of 1 mark for the jist of each sentence
Results?
The title group scored higher, using a Mann Whitney U test out results were significant
Conclusion?
The use of a title to prompt a schema is beneficial in aiding recall
Strengths?
Standardised- increases reliability as easy to repeat
Independent measures - little chance of order effects or demand characteristics
Weaknesses?
Low in mundane realism
Opportunity sample and age bracket make it not generalisable
Independent measures means ppt variables such as a naturally better memory aren’t accounted for
